Myopia Management

One in three children in Austria is nearsighted, and by 2050 this proportion will rise to over 50%. Nearsightedness (=myopia) not only impairs quality of life, but also increases the risk of serious eye diseases later in life (retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular degeneration). However, the progression of nearsightedness can be slowed with special contact lenses, therapeutic eyeglass lenses, and medical eye drops. We are now taking this a step further and have established a specialized myopia clinic.

Using a biometry device, we measure your children’s eyes with a special laser technology (SS-OCT = swept source – optical coherence tomography). A dedicated software system (Age-Matched Myopia Control, AMMC® Haag-Streit) enables the creation of a risk profile and the early detection of developing nearsightedness (see Refractive Errors) – even before the nearsightedness manifests in diopters. This is particularly important for siblings of nearsighted children. A prediction of the probable diopter strength – without and with therapy – is also possible. The results are presented to you and your child in a clear format and provided to take home. Please first schedule a standard check-up appointment for your child. After an initial examination, we will plan – if necessary – further check-ups in our myopia clinic.
