The eyelids protect the surface of the eye, moisten it, and wipe away small foreign bodies. Aging processes, environmental influences, and inflammation can lead to sagging and malpositioning of the eyelids, which in turn can affect the ocular surface and vision. Nodular scars can remain after inflammation and must be distinguished from eyelid tumors, which require prompt treatment.

Frequently asked questions about eyelid surgery

Eyelid malpositions and eyelid tumors2023-09-20T14:17:19+02:00

As with blepharoplasty, you should expect a healing period of several weeks after eyelid surgery. The range of possible conditions involving eyelid malpositions and, in particular, eyelid tumors is so broad that it is difficult to provide generally applicable recommendations. During the pre-operative consultation at our practice, we take the time to explain the procedure to you in detail.

Drooping eyelids, dermatochalasis, blepharochalasis, and blepharoplasty2024-01-07T14:16:44+01:00

The sagging of the skin on the upper eyelids (drooping eyelids) occurs at different rates for each individual. It can progress to the point where the field of vision is restricted and, for example, the legal requirements for driving a car are no longer met. In such cases, a blepharoplasty is indicated. Following a vision test and a visual field examination, we submit an application to the statutory health insurance provider. If this application is approved and the medical indication is thus recognized, a cost subsidy from supplementary insurance is also provided. The eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia at the Privatklinik Leech. Any blood-thinning medication must be discontinued before the operation. The eyelid surgery takes approximately 45 minutes. After the operation, you will receive a pressure and cold bandage in the recovery room for 30–60 minutes. You can then go home. Bruising (sometimes pronounced) will be visible on the eyelids for 7–10 days. Many patients prefer to stay at home during this time. Until healing is complete, you should take it easy, keep the eyelids clean, refrain from wearing makeup, and use an antibiotic eye ointment. You will receive detailed instructions during the follow-up visit the day after the surgery. The sutures are removed after 7–10 days. After 3–4 weeks, the eyelids are completely healed.
