Cataracts

The most common cause of cataracts is natural aging. As we age, the proteins in the lens change and lead to clouding. However, other factors such as diabetes, injuries, certain medications, or long-term UV radiation can also contribute to cataracts.

The symptoms of cataracts usually develop gradually. Patients often notice:

• Blurred vision: The world appears as if through a veil or fog.
• Scattered light points: Especially at night or in bright light, light sources can split into many small points.
• Light sensitivity: Bright light is perceived as unpleasant.
• Frequent changes in glasses prescription: Vision changes rapidly, and glasses need to be adjusted repeatedly.
• Discolored vision: Colors appear paler or yellowish.

A cataract cannot be cured by medication or drops. The only effective treatment is cataract surgery. In this procedure, the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial lens. Today, this operation is a routine procedure and is performed on an outpatient basis.
