The visual field is the area of the surroundings that our eyes can perceive without moving. Visual acuity is highest in the center of the visual field. Light sensitivity also varies. The visual fields of both eyes overlap, and the brain combines the visual fields of both eyes into one complete whole. Visual field defects often develop slowly, so the brain adapts to them, and the defects are not consciously perceived and are noticed late—often too late. We also do not consciously perceive the so-called “blind spot” at the point where the optic nerve enters the eye. With a specialized visual field examination, early defects can be detected and treated in time.
